Meeting Susan

So, on Friday, I had coffee with Susan Semonick, the woman behind the petition to eliminate two School Board seats.

We had never formally met, although I'm sure I have seen her at various School District functions. We had a good chat. Contrary to some of the rumours in the community, I don't perceive her work on this petition as a precursor to a run for School Board. She may run, but she didn't sound like someone who has made up her mind.

Susan does have very strong opinions about what is happening in the School District. She doesn't like a lot of what she sees happen at the Board meetings. In her previous role as a DPAC executive (and president), she has been to virtually every Board meeting for ten years. She has a longer history with the system than some of the Trustees and District staff.

Her main concern is dollars and cents, because every penny misspent is a penny less for students. That's why she is pushing for elimination of two Trustee seats; she believes, conservatively, that it will save the District $50,000 a year, and $50,000 would help a number of schools. She plans to let the petition lie for the next few weeks and then make a big push in January.
