Federal Money For Police
Today's Province reports that four BC "big-city" mayors--Vancouver's Sam Sullivan, New Westminster's Wayne Wright, Abbotsford's George Ferguson, and Victoria's Allan Lowe--want the provincial government to hand a share of $53 million in federal dollars to municipalities for beat cops. The Province wants to use the money for integrated policing units like taking on organized crime.
As for calling those four "big cities," I'm not sure New West qualifies: with less than 60,000 people, it's smaller than Langley Township, Maple Ridge, Chilliwack, Prince George. In fact, it's the 18th largest municipality in BC.
Ah, I'm just needling a couple of friends of mine over at VOICE New Westminster. They've launched a blog here, and if you're interested in New West issues, you'll enjoy it.
