Fed 5: The Morning After

Five federal election stories:

1. The Tories win a stronger minority. That's got to be a disappointment for Stephen Harper, as it seems like a majority was there for the taking--but goofy campaign moves and blunders kept them in minority.

2. Tories surge ahead in BC. Look at Langley, for example: the Liberals bled 12 points from 2006, two-thirds of which went to the Tories.

3. Mark Warawa wins. Big. Here's the final tally:

Warawa (C) 32,594 (61.4%)
Claxton (NDP) 8,898 (16.8%)
J. Gray (L) 5,888 (11.1%)
Meyer (G) 5,059 (9.5%)
R. Gray (CHP) 614 (1.2%)
Turnout=53,053 of 84,004 registered electors (63.2%)

The Liberal vote completely collapsed, while the NDP held steady. That was enough to put the NDP into second. Congrats to MP Warawa and his team on a dominant campaign.

Jake Gray's comments to the Advance were a bit disappointing: "We were kind of expecting Canadians to give us a few more votes," he said. "Anybody who voted for the NDP or Greens elected Stephen Harper."

I think that "Natural Governing Party" arrogance is part of what has sunk the Liberals two elections in a row. You don't "expect" votes--you go out, talk to people, ask for their vote, and earn them. And, in this riding, the Liberals weren't second place--what gives a Liberal here the authority to make that kind of comment?

4. Claxton looks ahead. A tip of the hat to Andrew Claxton, Shane Dyson and the NDP group for taking second--a big step forward for them. They ran the best local NDP campaign we've seen in this community for a long time--Claxton isn't kidding when he called it "the best New Democratic campaign that we have ever put on since the 1970s." Of course, they still lost by almost 45 points.

5. Calgary Grit offers thoughts on the campaign.
