Capping Unused Wells

Brian Lewis has an article in yesterday's Province about the dangers of uncapped wells in the Hoppington Aquifer as well as increased demand from residents, farmers and commercial users.
"As the demand everywhere for water increases, all of us are going to become more dependent on groundwater in this region," says Dave Mellis, a Langley-based water contractor who is also past president of the B.C. Groundwater Association.
"But I think with proper management, we can still reverse this water table decline," he adds.

Obviously action is needed on all fronts to ensure our groundwater is protected. And Councillor Charlie Fox thinks a good starting point are the uncapped wells.
But the immediate priority, adds Langley Township Coun. Charile Fox, is to cap the old wells.
"We've got to stop this bleeding," he says.
This is why Fox wants the township council to devise incentives for property owners to cap their unused wells.
