Advance Launches Campaign to Save Gary Johnson
Check out the lengthy--but very compelling--piece in the Advance today by reporter Roxanne Hooper, who is beseeching local residents to write the Salvation Army and ask for Gary Johnson to be reinstated as the lead hand at the Gateway of Hope.
I compare this situation to the day Trevor Linden was traded by the Canucks (Feb. 6, 1998, by the way). Linden was the face of the franchise, just as Johnson has been the face of the Gateway of Hope. They had become inseparable in many people's minds. Things didn't seem right with the Canucks until Linden returned several years later.
I'm not sure there would be a homeless shelter in Langley without Gary's hard work. He gently, but resolutely, worked on Langley organizations, governments, businesses, and residents, to open their hearts to these people in-need. Before Gary, most Langley folks resisted the idea of a shelter, as they were concerned about the "If you build it, more will come" phenomenon. That has changed--I think as a result of Gary's work (and Rich Coleman's role as Minister of Housing).
Langley is better because of Gary Johnson. There is no doubt about that.
